Music is a great way to relax or even energize yourself. Nothing can break the silence or bring a mood up like music. The world of music is bigger than you can imagine, with many genres and artists to discover. It can bring people together, make connections and draw feelings from the deep unconscious. Music goes with any occasion and can take anything to the next level.

Recently, I have taught a family member, who is a senior, how to use Apple Music. It is safe to say that this person is not the most technologically advanced, with them using YouTube as their main source of entertainment and music. For someone with an iPhone, it was shocking, but it made sense looking at how many apps this person had (nearly close to none). Besides the call function, it was like this phone really had no use.

With an extra spot in the family membership for our Apple Music subscription, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to teach them something technology-based without being too complicated. I first moved the app for them to their home screen so it was easily accessible. Afterwards, I showed them around the app and how to search for songs to download. Here is a short dialogue we exchanged during the process:

Them: “So what’s the point of downloading songs?”

Me: “So you can listen to them!”

Them: “I can just use YouTube for that.”

Me: “YouTube has ads though, and it can become time-consuming.”

Them: “This music has no ads?”

Me: “…”

The platform of music has changed quite a bit from records, cassette tapes, to apps where music is simply one click away. Being from a different generation, it is hard to grasp the idea that something as simple as music can be one at your fingertips at any point in time.

Once learning the basics of Apple Music, they were mind blown. The idea of accessing any song they wished and making “playlists” of their favourite music had them wondering how they used to listen to music and question their old ways.

Once they got the hang of it, it was nice to see them make a playlist and enjoy music on another level. I also mentioned that they are able to share their playlist with me or anyone they would like, but that’s another episode of teaching them how to send music through text messages or even airdrop.

It was nice and eye-opening to teach someone something very “simple” in my life and have it change theirs. It makes me reflect on what I could learn more about and have someone else’s “simple” be a change in my life. I hope this short story encourages you to not only teach those around you, but to be open to learning from them as well!
