Seniors that are aging in our community in Alberta come from various cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. To help their aging process, it is important that we realize these differences to try and provide them with the best possible help they may require. Successful aging deals with many domains in life such as health, housing, community, activities, and more. Managing life in general while also trying to succeed in these domains at the same time can be quite difficult.

This is why organizations such as Sage Seniors Association (previously known as Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton) focus their efforts on helping seniors tackle any troubles they may have in their life with regards to things like affordable housing, social connections, and fitness. The objective of Sage is to “enhance the quality of life of older persons and their families through the work of staff and volunteers” in the greater Edmonton area. Sage has services that assist seniors in a variety of areas from helping them acquire affordable housing, to holding coffee groups and day trips that help reduce isolation, to informational services that help with things like filing tax forms. Sage also runs a seniors’ safe house that provides temporary residence to seniors who want to leave situations where they are being abused.

To help achieve their goals, Sage accepts volunteers from many different backgrounds. Volunteers are accepted to help with things like data entry, decision-making on the board, leading clubs that center around topics like photography, or helping to teach a class on topics like language or fitness. Assisting Sage Seniors Association in their efforts is a good way for people to get involved in the community and help play a role in increasing the quality of life of the seniors in our community. The organization also accepts donations that are used to fund some of the programs that they run as well as the safe house.
